Dear all girl guides,
I know that this was a very shocking news that have been sent to you but this was fated. I know that some of you were crying but there isn't any use because it's fated. You all need to look on the brighter side and not seeing the bad side. Maybe there was a lot of reasons why the principal and vice-principal made this decisions. But you all must be strong as your guiding journey does not end here. It is only starting of your guiding journey.

Have you all thought about the skills that all of you have obtained during all the guiding session? Did you know that not all in the school can obtained that kind of skills. It's actually a gift that has been given to all of you. You can even use this skills when you grow up.

I hope all of you can take this matter seriously especially the SEC 1 and 2s. I hope you all will not blame anyone about this matter. I don't want to hear anyone crying anymore about this matter. I know it's very difficult to pull yourself together when you all heard this. Some of your friends might be saying that girl guides is not good and close down. Just try to pull yourself together and let this matter rest.

Although Yuhua Girl Guides is officially closed, I think we can still have some meetings around the corner. I hope that when I call for meetings, all of you can attend it without we calling you or forcing you. Just don't stress up yourself by this matter. There's always an obstacles in life . If there isn't any, this is not what we called as life. This is part and parcel of being a student in YUHUA.

If anyone of you wants to talk or share their fellings towards this matter, just contact anyone of us. (MISS CHAN, MDM GEJA, HIDAYA,SIU TING OR SHIVANI). Maybe we can share a listening earsor help you hold on to your worries. :)

Kayaking one-star course on Monday and Wednesday

MEETING TIME: 8.00am on Monday and Wednesday. Bus will pick us up in school and bring us back.

Attire for Kayaking one star course:

Swimsuit inside, Girl guides black T-shirt and PE shorts, Sandals or shoes (NO SLIPPERS).

COST of course:

$48 per girl.. The school is paying for you, so be responsible girls and turn up for the course you've signed up.

Kayaking 1-star course

Dear girls,

The kayaking course has been confirmed. Please remember to submit your consent forms to me by this Friday morning assembly.

The timing is confirmed to be from 9am to 4pm. So we will meet in school at 8am sharp on 1st Sep and 3rd Sep respectively. Please do not be late for this course. (else we may have to ask you to swim up and join us in the middle of the kallang basin.. )

If your parents are worried bout the safety, let me know so that I can mail them the safety documents which includes the evacuation route, the certifications of the trainers as well as the maintanence of the equipment. :) Although everything has been taken care of by us, please remember that you have to be responsible for your own safety too. Listen carefully to all the instructions given to you and be attentive at all times.

Jolene (and maybe EeNexx) cannot make it for the trip, is there another one who is interested still?? Sec 4 and 5 may apply too..

We will have to disappoint you by postponing the hot air balloon trip to next week because of Ms Geja has to go for a course and I need to work on the teachers' day performance preparations.

Passing out Parade

Please note that our Sec 4/5 passing out parade is on the 25th July 2008. At the same time, we will also be having our enrolment ceremony.

After much deliberation, both Ms Geja and myself do not agree to letting our girl guides stay overnight in our school for POP(staying over is exceptional to camping purposes only). Both Ms Geja and Ms Chan have other commitments on 25th July as well, so there will not be any teachers around to stay with you.

However, please do not let this dampen your spirits for POP! Let's us thank our seniors for all their contributions to GG so far and show them our utmost appreciation!

West Division Day Photos, Updates on National Day, Guides Meeting and NYAA

West Divison Day 2008

Ms Geja and Ms Chan are very pleased with us girls during the West Division Day. We saw all the girls putting in their very best in all the competitions that we have participated. Although we didnt manage to clinch any prizes at the end of the day, we felt that the process was very rewarding.

Sometimes, it is not the product that is important but the process. We have put together a musical item for the talentime through rounds and rounds of practice and hardwork. At the end of the day, we lost the trophy but Huimin knows how to play er-hu, GenNa plays solo on stage and EeNexx knows how to play a new song with the "Merlion".

The Sandwich making group knows how to make and decorate their dish beautifully...

The craft group made a great pair of comfortable slippers which Jolene wore it all the way back home...

The gadget group made the firmest chair ever!! Using physics laws that they have learnt! :)

Cross Country and National Day Observance Ceremony 2008

Cross Country

This friday is our school's annual cross country @ Japanese Garden.

The school requires the help of 2 girl guides(in uniform) for the prize presentation table once again. Anyone who is interested can approach either Ms Geja or myself by Thurs.

The rest of the girls can also help to distribute the mineral water bottles to the thirsty runners at the finishing line. :)

Mr Justin Tan needs some of our girls to help wrap the presents for the cross country tomorrow after school at 2pm. If you are interested, please find us at the PE room.

National Day Observance Ceremony 2008

I am proud to say that Girl Guides are chosen by the school to lead the observance ceremony for our National Day Celebration this year.

Hajjar is chosen to be the highly regarded Parade Commander.

Our girl guides (sec 3s only) are also chosen for the below duties:

1 State Flag Bearer around 1.6m tall. (3 other State Flag Bearers are from NCC, NPCC and NCDCC)

WEST DIVISION DAY DETAILS!

We will be meeting at 730am at the foyer in Yuhua Seconday School on Saturday.

The whole event will last until 3pm. If you wish to leave from Zhenghua Sec School, do inform us beforehand.

Attire will be our black t-shirt with BLUE guides' skirts.

Lunch will be served at Zhenghua Seconday School. Our school will pay for it. We have ordered a vegetarian packet as well for Kinyu.

West Division Day Details

The West Division Day 2008 will be held on the 12th July 2008. The details are as follows.

Theme : Discover Your Potential, Every Guide a Leader
Venue : Zhenghua Secondary School, 91 Senja Road
Time : 9am – 3.00pm,
Lunch is provided for $2 per person. (WE HAVE ORDERED FOR OUR GIRLS)

Competitions

We will be holding several competitions on that day. In order for your brownies and guides to enjoy themselves, we encourage you to enroll them in the following competitions.

Each school is only allowed to send in 1 team per coy. Maximum number of Guides/Brownies per team is 4. Some of the competitions, teams will have to bring their own materials. Your guides are not allowed to participate in the competitions that your school organized.

1. Talentime (Brownies & Guides ) – Sub Theme :Sisterhood/Best Friends
· Please bring along your musical instruments for your performance (singing or dancing)
· Please label your CDs with the school’s name, title of performance and track number that needs to be played for your performance.
· Please ensure that costumes must not be revealing.
· Judging criteria will be given to the school on the day of competition.

2. Fashion Parade (Brownies & Guides )- Sub Theme: National Education(YHSS girls are in charge of this competition)
· Design a camping outfit (using only recycled material) that features the icons of Singapore. Icons may include the Merlion, Natonal Flower, National Flag.
· And also an accessory that goes with the outfit for the camp
· Prepare a short speech not more than 2 minutes to explain the above outfit.

3. Cards Designing (Brownies & Guides)

Each school needs to pay $2 for the materials
Design a Happy Teachers’ Day and Happy Birthday Card using the materials

4. Craft Competition (Brownies & Guides )
Guides
The Craft activity is called Survival of the Slipper Challenge and the mission is to create a shoe or slipper.
Each team needs to bring cloth (2pieces), plastic bags (5), aluminum foil (0.5m), string (2m), straws(10), rubber bands(10), newspaper (1 stack), toilet rolls(3), yoghurt cups(2), egg cartons(2), cardboard(2), decorative materials, masking tape, staplers, scissors.

5. Gadget Making (Guides only)
Each team will be given instructions to build the structure.
Please bring 50 gadgets of 25cm long and a ball of twine.

6. Environment Booth (Guides only) – Sub Theme: Reuse ( we didnt take part in this)
To redesign old clothes to make them fashionable.
Things that need to bring are old clothes, fabric paint/beads/sequins/glitter, hangers, newspaper.
Two old clothes have to be re-designed. It can be in any combination (two blouses or one blouse and one pants, or two skirts) and display their products on hangers. The before and after photos will be taken.
Teams will be disqualified if they bring along old clothes that have been re-designed.
Teams will be judged based on their creativity, originality, usability of the re-designed clothes.

7. Environment Activity (Guides only )
· The team will be given a scenario drawing block before the competition.
· The team needs to bring newspaper(3), toilet rolls(2), cardboard(2), raffia string(1.5m), 500ml plastic water bottles(2), aluminum foil (1m), shoeboxes(2), Plastic/foam cups(2), masking tape, scissors, stapler and garbage bags

8. Games (Brownies and Guides)

Guides

Human Snake and Ladders
Each group would send 1 representative to be the ‘chess seed’. Each group will take turns to answer a question. If they answer correctly, they can roll the dice to see how many steps their ‘seed’ can advance. If their answer is incorrect, their turn would be forfeited. The questions would mostly be IQ questions. When the ‘seed’ reaches a square that has a ladder, she can advance up the ladder to the square the ladder leads to. However when she reaches a square with a snake, she will have to move backwards down the snake.
The winner will be the team that reaches the end point first.

Brownies
Treasure Hunt
There will be a few stations. Each team will begin at different station. Each team will receive a map with the station checklist. When team visits the station, a guide will endorse their attendance at the station checklist.
The team has to complete an activity or solve a puzzle before they can get the letter assigned to each station. The activities and puzzles will be extracted from the brownies handbook.
Teams will complete all the stations and at the end of their rounds, they will have to collect some letters to be unscrambled.

9. Quiz Competion (Brownies and Guides)

It will be based on the guides and brownies handbook.
No materials required.

10. Food Related Competition (Brownies and Guides) – Sub Theme: Racial Harmony Sandwich
All ingredients must be halal.
Please bring the ingredients and design the sandwich according to the theme given.
The judging will be based on presentation, creativitiy and explanation (ability to explain what do the different items in the sandwich mean)

What to bring along:

EZ link card to take public transport, as you will be travelling on their own to the Singapore River.

You should have at least $5 in your EZ link cards, though you will only be taking the MRT there and back, which will probably cost less than $1.50 in all.

You can bring your own snacks, water and umbrella/caps, since it will be a long morning for them, travelling on foot.

From last year's experience, the guides/brownies will take about 4 hours to complete the entire trail, inclusive of travelling time to and from Zhonghua Secondary School. The teams will come back to Zhonghua for the prize giving ceremony and lunch, which will be provided by our school. This will provide the girls with ample opportunity to interact and get to know each other.

The whole even will probably end around 1pm. Bus will bring us back to school.

Dear Girl Guides,

I was very disappointed with a couple of cadets who refused to cooperate with the leaders. The leaders and I are trying our best to make this camp a successful one but yet some of cadets refuse to pick up our calls, did not turn up despite being told to meet, did not call back despite being told to.

Perhaps, I have not brought my message clear but everyone should consider on people's effort. It can be little but it really helps a lot. You should not just be sitting on the couch, waiting for the leaders, ACL and I to get things for you. Everyone is busy and so it helps if everyone put in some effort. You cannot expect the leaders to keep calling you or just wait until a leader calls you because the leaders are not as free as you think they are. They are busy with supplementary lessons. You know that there's a camp coming so get moving and call your leader. I'm sure everyone has the list of phone no. right?

Or you should have at least inform us earlier if you are not able to turn up or whatsoever. I will discuss about this matter as soon as everyone comes back and do not even consider of skipping any of the sessions because ACL and I are taking this matter seriously since some of cadets do not seem to be understanding the importance of unity despite being told millions of time.

As for the rest of you, I'm very happy that you actually cooperated with your leaders, informing us before hand if you are not coming and etc. Trust me, we really appreciate that because at least we know what is going to happen, who's coming and who's not. Plus, I'm also very proud of those girls who went to the Health Zone course because I heard that none of you girls turn up late and you girls have made Miss Chan happy. Keep it up too! If the whole Girl Guides continue to put our best behaviour and we will be the most disciplined, most sporting, the ultimate best among the best uniform group in Yuhua Sec. Woohoo! :D

Speaking of which, our ex-member, Jody met me recently and told me about the feedbacks that she heard from our schoolmate, they said that Girl Guides have really change over the years, we have become more disciplined and infact better than some of the other uniform groups. So you see girls, if we continue to work hard, putting our heart and soul in everything we do, motivating and supporting each other, I'm sure we would be best. Keep up the good name and don't bring us, Miss Chan, Mdm Geja and the sec 4s, down okay?

Anyway, I'll see you girls tomorrow. Please do not be late because you will be very lost if you do. Report at the parade ground near to the canteen in your patrols at 12 noon sharp in your PE shirt and shorts. 2) Visit HealthZone, the one-stop healthy lifestyle exhibition centre

3) Attend a one-hour workshop on healthy living. This workshop will be conducted at HealthZone during the June Holidays.

Slot for Yuhua Guides: Mon 26 May 08 (11am – 1pm)

4) Complete the health-related personal assignment
· Plan and prepare 3 healthy snacks using the food items from the Healthy Diet Pyramid. Include your budget for the snacks.

· Surf the internet and print out 3 articles on ‘how to quit smoking’. Do a summary (no more than 200 words) on one of the 3 articles. (one article must be printed from http://www.hpb.gov.sg/. Other useful links include www.who.int/tobacco/en and http://www.cdc.gov.tobacco/ )

· Plan and lead an exercise routine for a duration of 60 mins for your troop. Follow this exercise routine for the next 4 weeks. (eg. Aerobics/dance workout, badminton game/roller blade/cycling, netball/ captain’s ball.

· Come out with a rap/ a jingle or song based on this theme: ‘How to quit smoking’.
(guides can collect anti-smoking pamphlets during their HealthZone visit. They contain useful information which can be used for the lyrics)

First and foremost, we have raised a total of 758 dollars in total for the walkathon! Good work! Although we did not hit our target of 50 per girl, I would say most of us have given in our best effort to raise the fund. (Those of you who gave us just $2 out of your own pocket, please reflect and think about the rationale of having the donation card. If one could afford $5 to buy KFC, why not help others with the little that we have?)

Come June Holidays is going to be very exciting for us. Please mark these dates on your calendar and plan your activities accordingly.

1) 20th to 22nd May: 10 girls guides (forming a group with 10 NCC boys) will follow the Sec 2 to a post-exam camp at Johore as part of our "overseas camp initiative". You will be given additional CCA points to participate in the camp. The campsite is going to be resort-like with air-con. There will also be many adventuous activities like mountain trekking to look for water falls.

2) 26th May: Healthy Lifestyle Course Badge

3) 2nd to 4th June: Girl Guides Camp in School

4) 13th June: Heritage Trail by ZhongHua Secondary

5) 21st June: Walkathon + Competitions

At the same time, I would like to remind all girls that our activities are very important to us. Your selfishness or absence in a certain event may cost us to lose our GOLD award. We have lost the Silver award last year, let's be united and bring upon pride to both ourselves and the school. Bear in mind that all our courses (Batik, rock climbing etc)cost us a lot of money. If you cannot commit yourself, do not sign up. Otherwise, all of us will have to bear the cost of all the courses we attend next time. These courses are a privilege to us, so please do not abuse this.

We invite you to participate in the many fun-filled activities that have been lined up for all.

1. “FUN Dress” challenge

Everyone enjoys dressing up for parties, how about dressing up for the Walkathon? We invite all Guides and Brownies to take part in this “FUN Dress” activity of the Walkathon. Each unit may send a representative as the mascot, but have as many girls may dress up as a character and walk together.

Theme: Woman Leaders Past and Present
Idea: You may want to dress as leaders that have inspired you. Put on your creative juices and be original.

For instance portray Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher, Queen Victoria, Mother Teresa, Mu Lan, Power Puff Girls, Athena, Maria Sarapova, Pink Ranger, Wonder Woman etc.

Criteria for judging: Creativity, Congruence with theme on leadership, Attractiveness and Appeal, Materials used for costume (Recycled or environmentally friendly materials)

*Be spotted by our roving camera and you might stand to win a surprise gift*

2. CHEER

Share your thoughts on “leadership” in the form of a cheer… create an original cheer routine accompanied with some movements with your cheers relevant to the theme “leadership”.

Rules: 1) Cheer routines will be NON-STUNTING (no elevation and human tosses)

2) The cheer should not be longer than 3 minutes.

3) The cheer should be performed in English only.

4) Props can be used to enhance the performance.

Criteria for judging: Creativity of cheers and routine, Congruence with theme, Positive message, Clarity of Cheers

3. Peace Message

Design a peace message for a patch on an A4 size paper and explain the meaning of the peace patch in no more than 10 sentences on another A4 paper.

Dear girls,

There will not be a girl guides session this friday and we will only meet after the Mid year examination. When we come back from MYE, we will need to plan for our annual Camp which will be held in school on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th June.

As such, in order to settle some administrative matters, we (including the Sec 4s) will meet for a short while straight after school at the foyer this FRIDAY 11/4/08 (and then we hope to proceed to the AVA theatre).

As we all can see, there isn't much rehearsal held for this year's parade. Can't blame anyone for that. This is because parade is the only chance when we can prove to everyone especially the boys that we girls are good in marching and show our girl power! It's tiring, I understand but once this parade is over we can have a deserving rest and you girls can concentrate more on the coming exams.

I'll expect full attendance and the best out of you for this Wednesday and the big day itself. I know you girls can do it, that's because I've seen the best out of you girls. Please be ready by 3 pm for the combined rehearsals. We are meeting at 2.30pm as usual right? Hajjar?

We are required to send our leaders from our company to represent us for this conference. Ms Geja and I feel that it will be a good opportunity for the seconday 3 students to go for this conference.

How to get there: Take Bus 132 or 145 from the stop on right next to the Redhill MRT
Station;
alight at the 5th Bus-stop (inclusive of the 1 at Redhill MRT Station); cross
at the pedestrian traffic lights

Attire: Guide-related Tshirt + Jeans + Shoes

ii. TRACK SHOES & SOCKS

Guides are to bring their own water bottles and a packed lunch as refreshment is not provided.

Dear ladies,

Many teachers have feedback to me that the girl guides were very helpful on the Sports Day! Great job! Many of you (Shivani, Hidayatul, Kathleen and many many more) helped out at the prize table when we required more man- (or should we say WOMEN) power. Good initiative, good teamwork and made our job fast and well done!

As for the refreshments, some girls (esp our strong Heidi) actually help carry the heavy boxes to the classes. We have also proven that we ladies don't need men around to do the job. Excellent job as well!

Last but not least, thank you Kinyu and HuiMin for being at the table, enduring all the heat from the scotching sun and then braving the rain towards the end. Thanks to Hajjar for putting everything together for us and coordinating with all the girls. Everyone contributed their part and make the event a successful one. :)

I hope to get the photograph from Mr Nazri (which we took on the vehicle). Nice one! Girl Guides not oni are helpful, we are also cool and fun.

AND on the side note, we now know that Huimin (sec 1) and Lina can really run. Next year we can nominate them for our CCA race!

Dear Girls,

It has been raining very badly recently so that is a need for us to have more rehearsals for the Speech Day.

I am very happy to see that all of you are working hard and improving by leaps and bounds. Let's strive hard (I believe we are better than NCDCC and the NCC boys at this point of time) to be one of the best contigent on the actual day itself!
